EL FASHER (9 June) – Darfur should generate thermal electricity from the Jebel Marra area to meet the needs of more people in Darfur. That says the electrical engineer Ali Shamar. He was a former minister of Public Works and Utilities in North-Darfur. He wants to develop an internal power supply system within Darfur. For Radio Dabanga he explained that Darfur is experiencing a severe shortage of electricity and water. Only El Fasher, Nyala and El Geneina are supplied with public electricity, but they also face many power cuts. The water storage system is too old for catering the needs of the urban population. Ali Shamar says that Jebel Marra is potential rich for generating electricity from the hot springs. According to previous studies, there is a potential source of 600 Megawatt. Ali Shamar told Radio Dabanga that electricity could become available for the entire Sudan due the construction of a nationwide network.
