Senator Kerry: Washington Will Not
Object to Referendum Delay
The Chairman of Foreign Relations
Committee of the U. S. Congress, Senator
John Kerry, said yesterday that the U. S. did
not mind delaying the referendum if both the
National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan’s
People Liberation Movement (SPLM) agree
on the delay. He added that the reason of
delay should be technical to increase
accessibility and assure better conduct of the
referendum, affirming that both sides
assured him that they were committed to
conducting the referendum on scheduled
time (Al-Ahram Al-Youm)
Referendum Registration Papers
Delivered to Khartoum
The South Sudan Referendum Commission
declared delivery of northern states’ voter
papers and registration records to Khartoum.
500 thousand voter registration records were
sent from South Africa to Khartoum. The
records will serve to register southerners in
the 15 northern states. Several millions of
records will be delivered to Juba soon (Al-
Ahdath)
Al-Bashir Declares Readiness of the
Government for Reviewing Constitutional
and Administrative Situations
President Omar Al-Bashir declared
yesterday the readiness of his government to
negotiation with the SPLM for holding a
comprehensive review of the constitutional
and administrative situation in Sudan and for
sharing power with all political forces. He
added that Sudan is facing a challenging and
decisive referendum and that all should
strive to avoid tension (Al-Ayyam)
Sudan Government Urges American
Administration to Lift Sanctions
In a meeting with Senator John Kerry, Vice
President Ali Osman Taha urged the
American administration to lift the sanctions
imposed on Sudan and to support the peace
efforts (Al-Khartoum)
JEM Returns to Doha Talks
The rebel Justice and Equality Movement
(JEM) led by Khalil Ibrahim, announced
that it will send a small delegation to Doha
for consultation with the mediators on
arrangement of full participation of the
Movement (Al-Khartoum)
Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM)
Refutes Existence of Rifts
Members of SLM ridiculed a statement
issued last week claiming that Minno Arko
Minnawi would be relieved as the leader of
the Movement. Deputy President of SLA,
Al-Rayah Mahmood, reiterated the
Movement’s commitment to peace,
affirming that Minnawi is still the president
of SLA (Ajras Al-Hurriya)
