A US advocacy group warned Monday that the response to an upcoming court decision about the boundaries of a disputed oil-rich region in Sudan could determine whether the country remains united or descends into renewed north-south civil war.
Recurrent fighting between the north and south in the Abyei region has strained a 2005 peace deal that ended more than two decades of civil war in which two million people died. Both sides hope Wednesday’s decision by an international tribunal on the region’s borders will help reduce the tension. (AP)
