KHARTOUM, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir received on Monday an invitation from Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi to attend a summit meeting of African leaders to resolve conflicts on the African continent to be held in Tripoli later this month.
Omer al-Bashir will also attend celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Libyan revolution.
Suleiman al-Shalumi, Gaddafi’s special envoy and foreign affairs secretary of Libyan General People’s Congress, delivered the invitation letter to the Sudanese president during a meeting at the presidential guest house in Khartoum.
“I conveyed a message from Gaddafi to President al-Bashir to invite him to participate in the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the September Revolution, and to take part in a summit of African leaders to resolve the disputes on the continent,” Al-Shalumi told reporters after the meeting.
Al-Shalumi also stressed his country’s hopes to reach a peaceful settlement on the conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, saying that “preparations have been made for the success of the mediation efforts on Darfur and the African summit dedicated to solve problems of the continent, first of which is the Darfur crisis.”
Sudanese government sources said that the letter handed over to President al-Bashir from his Libyan counterpart dealt with outcomes of last week’s talks in Tripoli.
The Tripoli talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel movements were aimed to give an impetus to peace efforts in Darfur by closing the ranks of Darfur rebel movements and unifying them for Doha negotiations.
The sources also disclosed that the Sudanese president would travel to Tripoli on Aug. 31
