Intimidation/Aresst of Women in South Darfur

I would like to share with you that two women activists (Fatima Mohamed Elhassan
and Fatima Mohamed Abd Elrhman) working for a local NGO were arrested by
security agencies, separately on 5th and 7th of December 2010 in Nyala. Both
women had earlier this year participated in civil society track consultations in
Doha. Due to this incident a number of women civil society actors have started
fearing for their own safety and security thus limited their activities.
Furthermore, the NGOs are refraining from visiting their fellow activists in the
prison fearing intimidation. According to unconfirmed reports the authorities
are preparing to charge both the women under section 21, 50 and 51 dealing with
contribution in anti sate activities, and waging war against the state. Also
according  to the unconfirmed reports, the case will be filed after the police
intelligence investigations.
