The International Criminal Court (ICC) has vowed to do everything within its power to ensure that the Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir is arrested and prosecuted for war crimes. In March, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber announced that it has issued an arrest warrant for Bashir. The Sudanese government dismissed the warrant and refused to surrender Bashir to The Hague in the Netherlands to face prosecution.
Speaking on the margins of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Cape Town, ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo reiterated the court’s conviction. “The government of Sudan has the legal obligation to arrest him. What he is trying to do is desperation by showing up in Zimbabwe where he can’t be arrested.” Moreno-Ocampo says the ICC is a permanent court and they will wait for Bashir, and he will face the charges.
