Clinton says meeting with Zuma 'extremely helpful'

US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has described her meeting with President Jacob Zuma, in Durban as extremely helpful; she met Zuma before jetting-off to Angola. She says Zuma gave his views on regional issues, including Zimbabwe, Somalia and Sudan. Clinton says her visit to South Africa was a reaffirmation of relations between the two countries.
“I greatly appreciated the President sharing with us his advice and suggestions about how we can make progress. We have the same goals-a peaceful progressive, prosperous continent, and the President’s advice was extremely helpful to us.”
Zuma says his administration seeks to take the good relations between South Africa and the United States (US) to a higher level. Zuma says there has always been good relations between South Africa and the US, what’s new is that both countries have new administrations which now have to work on taking the relationship to a higher level.
Clinton visited former President Nelson Mandela at his office in Houghton, Johannesburg, yesterday. According to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Clinton spent 30 minutes in private conversation with Mandela before she left to tour the Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre of Memory and Dialogue.
The former US first lady also met with her South African counterpart Maite Nkoana-Mashabane in Pretoria yesterday. During their meeting Clinton stressed that the US will work with South Africa to help find a resolution to the political situation in Zimbabwe. She added the Obama administration will persist with targeted sanctions against Zimbabwe’s leadership, but has pledged educational and health assistance to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
