At least 56 students Darfur in jail

KHARTOUM (29 June) – At least 56 university students from Darfur are in jail, while exams of their universities in Khartoum have started. Twenty were arrested days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for president Omar Al Bashir 4 March. They spoke openly about the indictment. Another group of at least 36 students from Darfur were detained 48 hours before the hanging of the 9 Darfurians convicted for murder of the journalist Mohamed Taha. According to the Students Action for the Rights in Darfur, all detainees were sympathizing with the movement of Sudan Liberation Movement faction Abdel Wahid al Nur. The spokesman of the students told radio Dabanga that all students have been traced in the two jails of Khartoum North, the Dabak prison and Kober prison. The majority of students were arrested in the suburb of Mayo, South of Khartoum. Amongst is the prominent student activist Mustapha Shereif, a third year Arts and Literature student from Khartoum University. Also the science-student Abdel Moneim, who started his fifth year, has been imprisoned. Radio Dabanga is informed about the entire list of names. The students organization asks for immediate release of all Darfurians students.
