NYALA (2 June) – People have died after Nyala Teaching Hospital stopped admission of patients due to the water supply that had been cut by the National Water Corporation. The water corporation of Nyala stopped the supply last Sunday due to bills the hospital didn’t pay in time. The general director of the hospital, Mubarak Abdel Rahman, told Radio Dabanga that the governor of South Darfur had ordered the resumption of the water supply. Today (Tuesday), the hospital could start admitting new patients. According to the general director of the hospital, several people had already died but he couldn’t say the specific number, since the suffering patients had to go to other places for treatment. He said he was forced to stop new admissions, since doctors and nurses can not treat people without water. Some patients in critical conditions were referred to the police-hospital others had to go to private clinics. The director said that his hospital didn’t have budget for the water bill of 123,000 pounds. (over 60,000 USD). He said the bills were exceeding the budget of the hospital. The National Water Corporation told Radio Dabanga that they were forced to cut the supplies since they had to advance the electricity bills in advance. Without enough cash, they would not be able to do so. Nyala Teaching Hospital faced earlier financial problems leading to a strike of medical staff.
