June 20, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – The US special envoy for Sudan Scott Gration met today with the delegations that will take part in the conference that will primarily discuss the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
Gration met with the Sudanese government delegation led by presidential adviser Ghazi Salah Al-Deen and Sudan people Liberation Movement (SPLM) delegation led by Blue Nile governor Malik Agar.
The two delegations were reportedly brought together afterwards to agree on the agenda for the conference.
The pro-SPLM newspaper Ajras Al-Hurriya said that the agenda includes census, elections, border demarcation, democratic transformation and self-determination.
Washington is said to believe that pushing for CPA implementation will bolster chances for settlement in the separate conflict in Sudan’s Western region of Darfur.
Furthermore, Khartoum sees the conference as an opportunity to discuss the bilateral relations with Washington. The Sudanese government wants to be removed from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism and lifting of economic sanctions.
US officials including Gration have suggested that is willing to consider partially lifting sanctions imposed since 1997.
