(AP) — KHARTOUM, Sudan – The head of the U.N. mission in Sudan has called on former southern rebels to leave a disputed oil-rich region on the border between the country’s north and south halves.
Ashraf Jehangir Qazi says the rebels’ presence there is “destructive,” a cause for concern and amounts to a violation of a pact to decide the area’s future. He gave no details.
Abyei is just north of the disputed border line between north and south Sudan. The two sides fought a civil war for more than two decades before they signed a 2005 peace pact.
Qazi’s weekend comment came ahead of the July 22 verdict by the Hague’s Permanent Court of Arbitration on the conflicting ownership claims to the Abyei region by the north and south of Sudan.
