KARTOUM, Aug 30 (KUNA) — Several days of heavy rains have killed 36 people and destroyed over 21,000 homes in Khartoum, the latest figures showed.
The Civil Defense Department said it distributed tents and other relief aid to homeless families as water pumping continue in devastated areas.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society issued an emergency call to relieve ill-fated people and warned of an enviornmental and health catastrophe.
Osman Jafar, the society’s secretary general, said that over 21,000 homes were destroyed and several public facilities were flooded.
Jafar said USD 50 million is needed for the needy according to preliminary estimates.
