UNITED NATIONS, June 5 (KUNA) — Sudanese Ambassador to the UN Abdalmahmoud Mohammed, reacting to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor Luis Marino-Ocampo’s call to arrest President Omar Al Bashir, said Ocampo “outlived his usefulness, if any,” describing him as a “lier and mercenary of death.
“You are not welcome to this organisation. You reduce the image of the UN,” Mohammed told Ocampo standing close to him in front of reporters in a rare case of confrontation, with security people in plain clothes hovering around the area.
Mohammed reiterated his government’s position that it will never cooperate with the ICC which is “politically motivated”.
Ocampo, addresing UN Security Council in an open meeting, urged the Sudanese government to arrest Al Bashir for crimes he ordered in Darfur.
“He (Ocampo) is dreaming if he thinks Sudan is going to cooperate with his court,” Mohammed said.
He warned Ocampo that he is a “fugitive of the Sudanese justice,” and if caught, “the Sudanese people will teach him a lesson in Justice”.
Ocampo did not react to Mohammed’s charges, telling reporters that he is simply trying to stop the extermination of 2.5 million Darfurians affected by the ongoing fighting.
Asked what the ICC is doing in reaction to Palestinian and other demands to prosecute Israeli officials for the war on Gaza earlier this year, Ocampo said “we are working on it”. (pickup previous) sj.bs KUNA 052112 Jun 09NNNN
