Freetown – Sierra Leone is to send its first peacekeeping mission to Darfur in December, the contingent commander said on Monday following a United Nations inspection visit to the West African state.
“The contingent is committed by the government of Sierra Leone to contribute to the UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur, and we have already an advance team of 50 soldiers,” said Lieutenant Colonel Seth Marah.
The UN team which was led by British Lieutenant General Edward Dawes inspected at the weekend “the preparedness of Sierra Leone’s armed forces and assessed available military equipment for the operations”, an army statement said.
The team was comprised of two UN officials from New York, three from the UNAMID mission in Darfur and one from the African Union.
The Darfur deployment will be the first for Sierra Leone after the country’s 10-year civil war which left thousands of people dead and its infrastructures devastated. – Sapa-AFP
