Heavy Fighting Erupts in Sudan’s Malakal between SPLA and Athor’s Forces (fulltext as pdf:USA_MN_20110313)
An outbreak of heavy clashes between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army(SPLA) and General Athor’s rebel forces have erupted in the capital of Upper Nile State, Malakal. The fighting broke out during the early hours on Saturday. Upper Nile State information Minister confirmed the clashes, but said it was still difficult to say how many casualties resulted from the clashes. Speaking in a separate interview with Sudan Tribune, Phillip Panyang Aguer, an SPLA spokesman confirmed the incident, but insisted that the army had managed to repel the militias out of the state capital.
