Talks between Sudan, SPLM-N suspended (Turkish Press) Peace talks between the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) were suspended on Sunday, one day after they were launched. “The adjournment was occasioned by a deadlock between the parties over a proposal made by the Panel in line with previous directives of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) and the UN Security Council,” the African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) said in a press release. Outlawed by Khartoum, the SPLM-N has been waging an active insurgency against the Sudanese government in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states since 2011. Since the conflict began in South Kordofan and Blue Nile in 2011, some 1.2 million people have been internally displaced or otherwise severely affected by the conflict, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Nearly 240,000 Sudanese refugees have fled the conflict to neighboring countries. Nevertheless, the AUHIP mediators called on the two parties to continue to negotiate between themselves to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Hilal’s gunmen have warned the population in the area not to stay away from the roads between Kutum, Saraf Omra, Kabkabiya, and El Fasher, as these roads are part of their “area of operations”. Musa Hilal comes from a family of leaders of the Arab Mahameed clan in North Darfur. In 2003, when the armed conflict in Darfur erupted, Musa Hilal was serving a jail sentence in a prison in Port Sudan. The Governor of Darfur had found Hilal guilty of stirring up ethnic conflicts resulting in the massacre of innocent civilians. However, Vice-President Ali Osman Taha released Hilal, and brought him back to mobilise more Janjaweed to help the government fight the Darfuri rebels. They took his life but Taha’s message of a tolerant Islam and equality for all Sudanese lives on among a devoted and intellectual group of followers led by his daughter Asma Mahmoud Muhammad Taha, 67. She says the time is now right to raise their voices, following 25 years of rule by “fundamentalist” Muslims who took power after earlier supporting former president Jaafar Nimeiri, whose courts sentenced Mr Taha to death. Asma Mahmoud’s efforts to revive the Republican Party coincide with increasingly vocal criticism of Sudan’s government since it slashed fuel subsidies in September, sparking the worst urban unrest of President Omar al-Bashir’s rule.
