Britain extends backing to Qatari mediation on Darfur

KHARTOUM, June 2 (KUNA) — Britain said Tuesday it was fully supporting Qatar’s mediations to address the conflict in Darfur.
British special envoy to Sudan Michael O’Neal, speaking to reporters after meetings with Sudanese officials, said he would be meeting with international envoys to Sudan to encourage all parties concerned to push forward the negotiations over Darfur, hosted by Doha and co-sponsored by the Arab League and the African Union (AU).
O’Neal’s discussions with the Sudanese officials covered the peace agreement between the south and north, the conflict in western Darfur province, relations between Sudan and Chad, and preparations for the upcoming elections.
Before visiting Sudan, O’Neal took part in a meeting of special envoys to Sudan from the US, China, France and Russia in addition to the UN-AU envoy Djibril Bassole.
They discussed ways of supporting the peace process in Darfur, which has been witnessing an armed conflict since 2003 killing and displacing more than two million people. (end) hhi.bs KUNA 022145 Jun 09NNNN
